Elaeagnus x ebbingei ‘Gilt Edge’ aka Gilt Edge silverberry is an underused evergreen shrub with bright green leaves edged in golden yellow.
This is a tough plant which will grow in a variety of conditions. Dry soil? Check. Salt-laden coastal winds? Check. Although it will flower best in a sunny spot, Gilt Edge silverberry will grow just fine in a shadier spot.
The sweetly scented but tiny silver flowers bloom in October and are sometimes followed by reddish orange berries. Birds, bees and butterflies love this plant, so it can be an important late season source of nectar for pollinators.
Gilt Edge silverberry will grow to 6-10 feet tall and wide but can be pruned smaller if desired. This is a great plant for brightening up your garden in the winter and we have currently have plants in one gallon size for $12.99.
