Backyard barbecuing is a classic summer tradition. When the sun finally begins to make an appearance after a dreary winter, we start dreaming about all the things we could be cooking this summer. Whether its a mouth-watering teriyaki beef roast, a zesty grilled chicken, or honey-cured smoked salmon, one thing is for sure. You need a good BBQ. But how do you choose? There’s literally HUNDREDS of options to consider. Lucky for you, we’re here to help. We’ve compiled a few tips to consider when choosing a BBQ.
The first thing you should consider is your fuel source. How do you like to cook? While gas grills can be more convenient, charcoal grills offer a cheaper alternative and unique flavour to your food. Gas grills will often carry a heftier price tag but are a great long-term investment and require very little clean up compared to a charcoal grill. With a gas grill you can start your BBQ quickly and have a better control over your temperatures. Charcoal grills are slower to heat up, but can get much hotter and give your food that distinct flavour that a gas grill just can’t. Mmmm…
Other things to consider..
If you live in a tiny condo, chances are you won’t be able to buy an XXLarge Big Green Egg for your home. Space restrictions are a big thing to consider when choosing your BBQ. If you have a large backyard, and love to entertain lots of guests then one of the bigger Big Green Egg varieties or the FURNACE 3 by Heston Blumenthal are great options for you. If you need something small to fit a more compact lifestyle, then perhaps you should consider the Mini Egg or the ever so stylish CUBE by Heston Blumenthal. Another great option if you’re short on space but not mouths to feed is The Space Grill, which can serve up to 10 people, but folds right up into its wall mount when you’re finished. Jackson Grills is a favourite brand of ours because they offer gas grills for every size and space. They have a few options for portable grills from the popular Versa Series, or more luxury options like the Lux 700. With so many customization options its easy to select the right grill for you. If space restrictions aren’t an issue for you and you’re looking to build your dream outdoor kitchen, we recommend looking at Delta Heat or Twin Eagles grills. Both specialize in sleek and luxurious grills. These grills are an obvious choice if you’re looking to treat yourself.
Certain BBQs will attract different kind of people. Once you determine what your cooking style is you’ll have an easier time choosing your new BBQ. You’ll want to consider things like how many people you will regularly be cooking for and what kind of things you’d like to cook. If you want to grill large amounts of food in a shorter amount of time, then you’ll likely want a bigger gas grill like the 38” model from Delta Heat. If you have the time, a smoker is a great option for BBQ enthusiasts. Big Green Eggs are popular for their versatility because they can be used as a smoker, grill, and oven. You can cook just about anything and still get than amazing flavour charcoal grills give.
If your restricted to a budget and can’t afford to invest in a brand new grill, then why not revamp your old one? There are plenty of accessories available so you can still treat yourself to some new and exciting grilling experiences without breaking the bank. We love the Island Grillstones for that exact reason! Made from naturally porous volcanic rock, the grillstone is a great way to add some new flavour to your grilling. Plus, its a healthier method of cooking! Another great option are GrillGrates. GrillGrates is an engineered cooking system that sits atop any existing grill surface OR can be used as a complete replacement on gas grills. For those who are really on a budget, but still don’t want to miss out on a fun summer grilling experience, we suggest the Casus Grill. The Casus is 100% biodegradable and made from lava rocks, bamboo, and FSC cardboard. It’s a great little grill to take down to the beach, and when you’re done you can just compost it! We made a video when we tested it out last summer to see if it lived up to all the hype, and we were thoroughly impressed.
